Hanging Wall Art in the Bathroom? Here Are Some Tips to Keep Them Pristine

Enhancing the appearance of your bathroom is a fantastic way to create a more relaxing environment while boosting property value. You can replace the lighting, repaint the walls, and purchase new bathroom fixtures.
But you may want a small touch of luxury by hanging bathroom wall art in your bathing space. While these can add some flair, the moisture build up may damage these pieces over time and impact the general look of your bathroom.
That does not mean, however, that hanging vintage artprints is not a viable decoration option. If you’re not sure how to select and take care of bathroom wall art, explore our helpful tips below:
- Install Moisture-Proof, Inexpensive Artwork
Humidity will be a problem when hanging new wall art in your bathroom. Moisture can get trapped under the glass of framed pieces and could be absorbed by most paper-based prints. Additionally, you may face issues with mould growth.
Don’t place irreplaceable wall art such as limited-edition prints, antique movie posters, and original paintings to prevent costly damages. Substitute these with cheap printed copies you can replace any time it starts deteriorating. Canvas prints are also a good choice due to their special coating.
We also recommend framed metal prints, which are not typically affected by moisture, rust, warping, or mould.
- Vent the Bathroom
Appropriate bathroom ventilation can significantly reduce moisture levels, protecting your prints from damage.
Before taking a bath or shower, turn the bathroom exhaust fan, then let it run for at least 20 minutes after finishing. Alternatively, you can use a dehumidifier if your bathroom does not have a built-in exhaust fan.
Leave the door and window open as often as possible to remove excess moisture. By keeping humidity at bay, you can prolong the life of your wall art.
- Apply Clear Varnish
Water-based clear varnish on your prints will allow you to maintain their condition better and reduce fading. While they can’t offer waterproofing, the varnish makes it easier to wipe the surface of the wall art using a damp cloth.
Before applying spraying of the sealant, be sure to clean the canvas of dirt and grime.
- Choose an Appropriate Location
Another factor determining the amount of moisture your wall art may be subject to is the location. As much as possible, you would want to hand them far from any water source – we recommend placing them at the end of the long wall.
If you wish to have the wall art close to the bathtub, place it at least 20cm higher than the tub to avoid dampness seeping through the print.
